Congregation Beth Yeshurun associate rabbi and member of Hebrew Order of David Lodge Galil, Rabbi Steven Morgen, unveiled 13 markers at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 24. He was accompanied by 14 members of HOD and cemetery manager Larry Caulfield. Beth Yeshurun volunteer Woody Fox assisted with the unveilings.

Both HOD lodges – Galil and Tikvah – have continued their community-wide Gravestone Project that began on Oct. 6, 2019. Their goal is to place a permanent marker on all unmarked Jewish graves. All congregations with cemeteries in Houston also are involved.

There are still several hundred graves in Houston Jewish cemeteries without markers.

In some cases, it is not known who is buried in unmarked graves, and because of Houston floods, documents have been lost. Years ago, a small pole with a paper inside identified who was buried in these plots, but often the paper was lost to wind or water.

The Gravestone Project unveiled its first eight markers, two at four different cemeteries, in 2019. The project got underway at Beth Jacob Cemetery, 2300 Almeda Genoa Rd., continued at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery, 1037 N. Post Oak Rd., then at Beth Israel Memorial Garden, located in the Woodlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery at 1101 Antoine Dr., and finally at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet St.

According to rabbis, providing a grave marker is one of the highest mitzvahs one can do because the person you are doing it for cannot thank you.

While HOD funded the first eight markers, continuing the project has been made possible by the generosity of members of the community. Gaitz Memorials lends its assistance with purchasing and engraving, and Jose Ramirez and his crew at Ramirez Cemetery Services place the markers.

Flags for Fallen Vets 2024 and Memorial Day

"Flags for Fallen Vets" takes place the Sunday before Memorial Day at Houston's National Cemetery 2nd only to Arlington.

Volunteers plant flags on graves in preparation for Memorial Day. (FYI there are many Jewish graves all around the cemetery.)

HOD & Jewish Veterans (JWV Levy Post 574) both assist with this Mitzvah.

It is a family friendly event.

During the dinner Men from all denominations of Judaism mingled,
socialized and enjoyed a schnapps together. One attendee was overheard
commenting that this is probably something that only happens in Houston.

Historically HOD Lodge Galil who also comprise of members from all
forms of Judaism or lack thereof, have the largest contingent of
participants.

The Hebrew Order of David is an outstanding non-profit Jewish fraternal
organization committed to the ideals of Unity, Fraternity, Love and
Peace across the world, and the personal development of the members.
These ideals have been practiced by HOD International since our earliest
days in 1896 when HOD started in ENGLAND.

Sunday 5-29-2022 at 9 am:

Members of Houston’s two Hebrew Order of David Lodges, their wives, family members and friends met at the Houston Veterans’ Cemetery to plant American Flags at the graves to commemorate Memorial Day.

The annual event was very well coordinated by HOD Galil board member Mark Katzenellenbogen.

Joining the HOD people were members of Houston’s Jewish War Veterans Post 574. TAPS was expertly blown on the bugle by Russel Haehl.

This is the sixth consecutive year that HOD has been a part of this important memorial.

Some unaffiliated Jewish volunteers appreciated joining the group and reciting Kaddish prior to the formal Flags for Fallen Vets event.

Worldwide - our Gravestone Marker Project has been replicated

On the morning following the 7th Anniversary ceremonies, the HOD International delegation visited the original Hebrew Order of David Gravestone Project, which was initiated by HOD in Houston. The Gravestone Project has now been taken up by HOD Lodges in Atlanta and London UK so far with other Lodges looking to follow soon.

Hebrew Order of David International (HOD) Lodge Galil "Gravestone Project"

It is said that to make a minyan at a funeral is the ultimate mitzvah: You can have no hope of the deed being "returned," so it is a truly selfless act. We at Lodge Galil of the Hebrew Order of David International (HOD) are coordinating a Community-Wide Mitzvah project to place a permanent marker on all Jewish graves that do not have them. Over the past two years, this project was partially underwritten through multiple grants from the Houston Jewish Community Foundation (“HJCF”). HOD is proud of our philanthropic partnership with the Foundation. HJCF works diligently to ensure the needs of our community are met in lasting and meaningful ways by serving as a central resource and advocate for charitable giving.

Houston’s Hebrew Order of David Lodge Galil president Joe Blog and Nat Levy Scholarship chair/board member Andrew Toubin presented checks to two Jewish day schools for a student who is a Nat Levy Scholarship recipient for the 2022-’23 school year.

HOD created a scholarship fund in December 2020 at the Houston Jewish Community Foundation, in memory of Nat Levy, who was HOD Lodge Galil’s elder statesman. The scholarship fund started with a donation from the Levy family.

The Shlenker School’s Sharon Ellerin and Casey Suter with HOD’s Joe Blog and Andrew Toubin.

In addition, the scholarship fund is partially underwritten by funding from the Goldstaub Community Special Needs Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation. HOD Lodge Galil has grown the fund through fundraising, donations and from its Tikkun Olam Fund.

HOD hosted Bill Orlin as their featured speaker.

Orlin, who will soon turn 90, is the oldest male Holocaust survivor in Houston. He is an active member of JWV Levy Post 574 and speaks to numerous organizations during the year, reminding younger generations about the atrocities of the Holocaust so as to prevent it from ever happening again.

HOD (Hebrew Order of David) a Worldwide Adult Jewish fraternal organization since 1904 has two Lodges in Houston. They meet regularly and perform many Mitzvah projects in the local Jewish Community.

JWV (Jewish War Veterans) Levy Post 574 was chartered in Houston in 1964 and includes members who are Veterans of the "Allied forces". Besides monthly meetings they present the colors when requested and volunteer at numerous events. Jack Schlossberg, an HOD member was the Commander of JWV's from 2014 to 2022. Dave LaVine is the current Commander. Their Annual Dinner and Installation of Officers will take place May 22, 2022.

Both organizations will participate at the "Flags for Fallen Vets" Sunday May 29, 2022 starting at 8:30 am. This annual event takes place at the Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery, second in size to Arlington National Cemetery. Flags are placed in front of each grave prior to Memorial Day irrespective of religion. There are many Jewish Graves dispersed around the cemetery.

Most of the HOD Brethren who attended the event included many who are Veterans and some are also members of JWV's Levy Post 574.

Back in the 90’s a B’nai B’rith volunteer and Seven Acres supporter coordinated a program during the High Holidays that benefited the residents of Seven Acres. The driving force behind that program was volunteer Max Goldfield. Max and the Houston B'nai B'rith Council partnered with the Jewish Herald Voice to assist by printing a form that people could fill out, send in and purchase a dozen long stemmed roses. The program, Roses for Rosh Hashanah, was active for about seven years and then was discontinued.

Fast Forward to the present and the Roses for Rosh Hashanah program is up and running again this year. Mark Katzenellenbogen and the Hebrew Order of David (HOD), Lodge Galil along with Lodge Tikvah, have stepped up to run this wonderful volunteer fundraiser that will benefit the residents of Seven Acres and The Medallion. “I worked on this project with Max Goldfield back in the 90’s and I have fond memories of what a worthwhile fundraiser it was,” remarked Katzenellenbogen. “Both Houston Lodges of Hebrew Order of David are proud to be bringing Roses for Rosh Hashanah back to benefit the residents of Seven Acres and The Medallion.”

In addition to purchasing holiday flowers for friends and family throughout the community, the roses can be purchased for residents of Seven Acres and The Medallion. One dozen red roses will be wrapped with filler and greenery, ready to be placed in your vase. (Roses for Seven Acres and Medallion residents will be placed in vases.)

Now, as well as back in the day, these roses will express one’s best wishes for a happy and healthy new year to our loved ones. One dozen roses will cost $ 36.00 if they are picked up at the Seven Acres Circle Drive near the Flagpole - 6200 N Braeswood, Houston, TX 77074 and $ 48.00 if they are to be delivered within a 10 mile radius of Seven Acres. A satellite pick up location will also be located on the west side of Houston.

Members of Houston’s two Hebrew Order of David Lodges and their wives met at the Houston Veterans’ Cemetery to plant American Flags at the graves to commemorate Memorial Day. The annual event was very well coordinated by HOD Galil board member Mark Katzenellenbogen.

Joining the HOD people were members of Houston’s Jewish War Veterans Post 547. TAPS was expertly blown on the bugle by Russel Haehl.

This is the fifth consecutive year that HOD has been a part of this important memorial.

Most HOD activities have been contained or postponed due to the pandemic except for the Mitzvah project that the Hebrew Order of David (HOD) started a few years ago. Following CDC and cemetery guidelines, several unveilings have taken place during the pandemic.

Harry Brown, from the Chevra Kadisha, explains that the work done by the Chevra Kadisha closely matches HOD’s Gravestone Project, which is placing gravestone markers on all of Houston’s unmarked Jewish graves.

Brown states that the Chevra Kadisha would, once a year, organize a lunch or dinner to thank donors for their support, but due to the pandemic, theChevra Kadisha once again decided to contribute those funds to HOD to support the Gravestone project.

Unveiling of 16 markers at Emanu El Cemetery by Lodge Galil and Lodge Tikvah. Members of HOD Houston performed another Mitzvah, during rain, shine and even the prediction of snow, while adhering to CDC guidelines.

This unveiling was originally postponed due to Covid-19 but was rescheduled. It is part of our ongoing Gravestone Project. 10 Brethren plus Rabbi Fixler from Congregation Emanu El, participated.

HOD Lodge Galil creates Nat Levy scholarship

Houston’s Hebrew Order of David Lodge Galil has begun a scholarship fund in memory of Nat Levy, who was HOD Lodge Galil’s elder statesman. This scholarship will add tremendous value to the fledgling lodge, which started in Houston in November 2015.

Nat Levy, who earned the special title of “Worthy Brother,” would regularly educate members about the traditions and history of the fraternity. He was greatly respected by members throughout the world – with lodges in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Israel and South Africa.

Nat Levy entered the Hebrew Order of David Jewish men’s fraternity many years ago, joining the board of the Otto Warburg Lodge in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1963.

The Nat Levy Scholarship fund is held at the Houston Jewish Community Foundation. The Levy family made a generous donation to the fund to start it. HOD Lodge Galil added to the scholarship from its own Tikkun Olam charity fund.

Lodge Galil presented the Mitzvah Man Award for this year to Scott Gardner.

On presenting the award, HOD Galil President Bro. Joe Blog said that HOD greatly appreciates the extremely generous support that Scott has provided for the Lodge and the worthwhile charities it supports. Joe continued to add that Scott is an extremely valuable member of the Hebrew Order of David Galil family in Houston. Many of the HOD Galil members work diligently, providing many acts of kindness throughout Houston and the surrounding areas. It was difficult to select a single person to receive this award, but Scott is an excellent recipient.

It is intended that this becomes an annual award, presented each year to a Lodge member going above and beyond the norm for Mitzvah activities.

This year alone, HOD Galil has provided charitable support for many local Jewish Charities including the Federation, JFS, Friendship Circle, Aishel House, Count Me In (BBYO), Seven Acres, Meals-on Wheels, Hebrew Free Loan Association, Goldberg Towers and Chai House in Dallas.

HOD Global Initiative - the HOD / Maccabi Fun Run

Dear Houston HOD Brethren All,

Announcement of new HOD Global Initiative - the HOD / Maccabi Global 5k Fun Run

HOD International Lodges are going to be partnering with Future Leaders Forum, a division of the Maccabi Games World Union, to participate in a 5k race called the Maccabi Fun Run. Maccabi Fun Run is an extraordinary community FUN and Charity Sport Day where people run or even walk together with, and for their favorite charity organization. 100% of your registration fee will be donated to the charity of your choice from our list! This is what makes Maccabi Fun Run a special community event, different from anything you have ever experienced!

This event will be held in each of the cities that HOD lodges are located in globally. This will be an opportunity for each of our Lodges to raise some money for charities we select as well as great publicity for us. The selected charities will be associated with Children's Health and Well Being.

The Maccabi Fun Run was held in 25 cities across the world in 2019 with over 15,000 people participating. Hundreds of Jewish organizations participate in it and several other Jewish organizations will also be participating with us. People/families of all ages participate, and they can walk or run.

The organizer from HOD is Anton Teper, who is the HOD Deputy Grand Lodge President. Anton is based in London. He is working with the organizer of the Maccabi Games for us to partner with them. The goals of HOD participating are to affiliate with a cause: to raise funds for a any local charities that are related to Children’s Health and Well Being.

Our HOD role is simple: for our Houston lodges to get at least 30 runners in Houston to participate. Each runner will raise some money for our charity. That’s it. We expect though that we will have hundreds or thousands of runners for this event.

Also, since we have experience in organizing events in Houston, we can also help organize this event or serve on committees to help organize if you wish. We will be working with the Houston volunteer from the Maccabi Games Future Leaders Forum who will be organizing this in Houston. Also, the race will not be scheduled until possibly summer 2021 if it is safe at that time. If Covid is still an issue, then the race would be scheduled later in 2021 or possibly into 2022.

A true Mench performed a Mitzvah today.

A true Mitzvah performed by a Brother of HOD Galil.

One of the many reasons I am proud of our Jewish Fraternity.

Recently I tried to post an item on the "JobWise" section of the website but in the end it was easier to use the Official Info. secure What'sApp site. It mentioned a Job or Mitzvah for a Companion once or twice a week for 2 to 4 hours to spend time with an 82 year old Jewish man who is still physically active but who is suffering from cognitive decline.

One of our Brethren stepped forward as he had the desire, time and ability to assist with this as a Mitzvah.

A shidduch resulted. A meeting with the gentleman and his wife resulted with a visit and she sent me a personal email - "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness in helping ..name... After the meeting with ..Bro.. he was very pleased, he enjoyed the conversation and companionship." At the same time I received a copy of this from our Brother to the Gentleman's wife - "I enjoyed meeting you and ..name.. and look forward to returning Wednesday".

Thank you to the Brother who stepped forward.

You are a true Mench.

The Official Consecration and Installation of Founding Officers of Lodge Tikvah took place in West Houston, Texas on Sunday November 1st 2020 at 11.30 am.

This was a worldwide event following HOD and CDC guidelines with social distancing. Some local HOD members gathered at the Chabad of West Houston location while others took part via Zoom on a large TV screen. Participants from the organizations International Governing body conducted the ceremonies with assistance from members of the North America Governing body.

The second Houston Lodge was sponsored by Lodge Galil of Houston, Texas who were recently Honored with the award of "Premier Lodge of the Order" at the 2020 Biennial International Conference.

The Hebrew Order of David is a Jewish fraternal organization supporting its members, and serving the community, applying Jewish ideals and values while providing its members the opportunity for personal development. It is over 100 years old.

The brethren of the Hebrew Order of David Lodge Galil, Houston’s Jewish men’s fraternity, decided to allocate funds normally used for lodge meetings, to some of the local Jewish Charities.

Joe Blog, President of HOD Lodge Galil says that it is one of the main roles of the Hebrew Order of David to provide support to the local community. These donations help the lodge to meet its goals of Unity, Fraternity, Love and Peace.

Goldberg Towers Purim party 2020

Even though there are not nearly as many Jewish residents living at the Goldberg Towers as there were in the 1980's, there still are many who do call it home and they really appreciate Yiddishkeit. The HOD sponsored Purim party was well attended. The residents enjoyed it, especially with so many fantastic Jewish kids participating.

Kosher Chili Cookoff - HOUSTON Community - 2020

Our chili was clearly the BEST. We ran out early and everyone who commented, said it was ... SUPER GOOD.

Even though we did not place, there is no question that we were once again the "most social" group as was reported last year (2019) by the JHV food reporter.

14 Brethren placed 8 markers at Adath Israel Cemetery

so 16 stones unveiled so far.

Four of the eight were unnamed. This is a very old cemetery that merged into the current UOS (United Orthodox Synagogues). Many records were not passed on to UOS and/or some were lost during the three major floods that devastated UOS between 2015 and 2017.

Chevra Kadisha Supports HOD Gravestone Project

February was Houston’s Hebrew Order of David’s (HOD) “Chaverschaft” (social) month, where members meet for a friendly barbecue, they donate blood together, with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Centre and listen to an interesting guest speaker. The guest speaker was Harry Brown, representing the Chevra Kadisha.

Harry explained how the group of dedicated volunteers takes care of the last rights of our loved ones after they pass on. He explained that the deceased are ritually washed, dressed in shrouds, and prepared for burial according to tradition for their journey to the next world. The audience of HOD brethren and their families were impressed by the amazing work done to people who can never repay the volunteers; the highest form of Jewish charity. It was clear to all how the work done by the Chevra Kadisha, so closely matches HOD’s new Gravestone Project, which is putting gravestone markers on all of Houston’s unmarked Jewish graves.

Harry surprised those present when he explained how normally the Chevra Kadisha would, once a year, organize a lunch or dinner for their donors to thank them for their support, but this year they decided to rather contribute these funds to HOD to help finance the Gravestone project. The very generous donation from the Chevra Kadisha, was most graciously accepted by the HOD team involved in the project.

HOD at YOM LIMMUD Houston 2020

Thanks to all Brethren (at least 18 that we counted but not all pictured) who volunteered at Yom Limmud and/or visited our HOD table to show support and assist the local Jewish Community.

Kol Hakavod to Marna Meyers (Bro. Haim Segall's daughter, Bro.Ivor S.'s sister, Bro. Josh S.'s aunt and Bro. Steve M.'s wife) on a fantastic job running her first Yom Limmud for the Houston Jewish Federation.

The question was: Were we advertising for JHV (Jewish Herald Voice) or did they have a 2nd table.

The answer: we have been fortunate to be featured in the newspaper 6 times over the last few years.

One frame was from the Houston Chronicle write-up about our work during Harvey and the other is a copy of the 2020 HOD pamphlet.

The table also contained two photo albums. One with pictures of members assisting with HOD Lodge Galil's Gravestone Project and the other that has many pictures from various events. It also has a dedication to Wor. Bro. Nat Levy Z'L.

HOD 2020 - Spouse Appreciation Brunch

A good opportunity for us to enjoy a time of "chaverschaft" with our better-halves, and show them some of what we do as HOD brethren took place with a full house (48 people) on Sunday 2-9-2020.

Hebrew Order of David Raise Funds for Zichron Menachem in Israel

Houston’s Lodge Galil of the Hebrew Order of David (HOD) presented a cheque for Zichron Menachem at the annual installation of officers for 2019-2020. Zichron Menachem provides support for any young person in Israel under the age of 25 living with cancer, as well as their parents and siblings.

Immediately after Hurricane Harvey, HOD International diverted all its fund raising, intended to go to Zichron Menachem, to provide funds for hurricane victims in Houston. For this reason, the local lodge Galil decided to allocate part of it’s charitable giving from its Tikkun Olam fund to this worthwhile organization.

Seen above are the three founding members of HOD Galil, officers Paul Wainstein, Joe Blog and Lawrence Barris who are with HOD International representatives Les Kraitzick and David Joss.

Constable Alan Rosen, who loves assisting his Jewish community, spoke to a group of Hebrew Order of David members and guests after their regular monthly meeting.

He explained some of the differences among the Constable’s office, the local police department and the criminal justice system. He also mentioned various facets of the constables’ duties and about his Precinct 1.

Other topics that he detailed were the procedures that his office has in place for those who suffer from mental illness, and about mental warrants.

Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet. Brother Aaron Karolinski passed away at 7:45 pm Friday evening 6-14-2019 surrounded by his entire family and Bro Steve L and his wife.

There will be a Memorial Service at 6 pm on Monday 6-17-2019 at the VFW located at 4402 W. Walnut St., Pearland, Texas 77581. The funeral will be in Massachusetts.

Following the event, some members did a Mitzvah by attending Shiva for a non-member who needed to make a Minyan for his brother.

When I joined HOD it was for the high purpose of the fraternity and the comradery of the brothers.

Recently, however, another reason has emerged. The high quality speakers are providing enlighteningtalks and discussions.

Dayan Gross of the Anti Defamation League (ADL) spoke at this months meeting. Regardless of your opinion about the ADL, its mission, and how it has evolved since its founding in 1913, learning how it views itself and how it functions was both interesting and enlightening. We got a special insiders look at it. For instance, we learned that the ADL, as a non-governmental organization, is not constrained by due process in its ability to investigate and surveil individuals, as opposed to the FBI, which has constitutional constraints on its authority to carry out surveillance and investigations of individuals. This results, we learned, in a symbiotic relationship between the ADL and the FBI. A deep dive into the workings of such organizations as the ADL and FBI is enlightening and worthwhile. Thank you to Mr. Gross, HOD, and our brethren who bring such high quality and enlightening speakers to our group.

The Dr Max Nordau Lodge of the Hebrew Order of David International was consecrated on Sunday 15 February 1920 in Brakpan, South Africa

The Consecration President was Bro M Joffe. The Lodge closed in 2000 and the last President was Wor Bro Solly Wasserman.

Max Simon Nordau, was a Zionist leader, physician, author, and social critic. He was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organization together with Theodor Herzl, and president or vice president of several Zionist congresses.

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water.

Also hammer &/or long screw driver or wood dowel, 12 inch ruler. We will have some extras of these items so no need to rush out and purchase.

HOD will NOT be participating in the "Flag Removal" as it takes place on Shabbat.

HOD International has chosen Zichron Menachem as HOD's charity of choice, and HOD Lodge Galil's board has chosen to follow suit. That means, that in addition to all of the good work we do locally, each lodge will support Zichron Menachem financially each year.

Zichron Menachem provides support for any young person in Israel under the age of 25 living with cancer, as well as their parents and siblings.

Families of all religions and backgrounds turn to Zichron Menachem for the help they need most, be it information, a second opinion from our “clinic of hope”, or a break from the punishing routine of medical appointments.

Men's Mock Seder 2017

HOD Galil was out in force at the 12th annual United Orthodox Synagogues Man’s Mock Seder, sponsored by UOS, Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism, Congregation Beth Yeshuran and Congregation Brith Shalom. Twenty-eight brethren came out to enjoy a fun evening of steaks, scotch and beer along with some great conversation and Passover skit put on by the attending Rabbis: They debated which of the Four Sons were most relevant in today's world. Many brought clothes to be donated to Career Gear Houston, a non-profit organization promoting the economic independence of low-income men by providing professional attire and essential life skills. All monetary proceeds went to the Jewish Family Services Passover Assistance Fund.

The annual event is held in memory of Phil Brochstein, who was a dedicated volunteer and instrumental in establishing this program.
