HOD Galil - Monthly Update.
To quote Houston, Texas history from 50 years ago, 'one small step for man one giant leap for mankind'

so as we celebrate the 90th Birthday of Bro. Chaim apparently the Segall family have also made history as the only known family to have at least four (4)  generations of HOD members.

* * * *

Wednesday June 5, 2019 - Bro. Chaim Segall DAY.

Brethren, today Bro. Chaim S. celebrated his 90th Birthday with his typical happy and cheerful smile. He stated that he "feels half his age and wishes others felt and enjoyed life as much as he does."

Above - Most but not all of the Segall family.  Bro. Chaim, his son Bro. Ivor, daughter Marna (married to Bro. Steve M.) and Marna's grandson (not a member till he reaches 21).

Below - three (3) generations of Segall members - Chaim, Ivor & Jason.

Bro. Hyman (Chaim)'s late Father pictured below - Bro. Abraham Lewis Segall took the first step when he was initiated into HOD in 1944. This is an "International family" as  Bro. Abraham Z"L" was born in London, spent his younger years in Paris where he met his wife, then on to Egypt before settling in South Africa. Bro. Chaim and Bro. Ivor have been in Houston for many years and Bro. Jason who was recently initiated into the order is a native Texan born and raised in HOUSTON.

President's Column:

I want to thank Bro Mark K for his forbearance with my lateness on this month’s column.  Bro Mark has my permission to nag me more, and earlier.

This month’s column will seem a bit random at first, but bear with me.  I buy used cars - I don’t like having a car note, and personally, I don’t find the cost worth what you get with a new car.  (Your mileage may vary - literally.) But one thing you absolutely need when you have older cars is a good mechanic that you can trust.  I’ve had one here in Houston for nearly ten years, and I recently learned that he had decided to close up shop. I’ve got to tell you - I am devastated.  He was that unicorn - a good, honest car mechanic more interested in my business and helping me than a quick buck. More than once he had told me that there was a more-expensive repair option and a less-expensive one - and that he recommended the less-expensive one.

So my thoughts naturally turn to where I’m going to source my next mechanic.  And, of course, HOD has the answer for that. I get my AC serviced by Bro Steve Meyer - and I can trust that he’ll treat me square.  I get my plumbing work done by Bro Gary Bloch - ditto. It’s one of the side benefits of our brotherhood that we are a network of men with similar problems - and either there is a brother that does what you need, or at the least has a trusted recommendation.

So with that - who has a recommendation for a good car mechanic?

Thanks!

Fraternally,

Bro Marc P

PS: Disclaimer: Bro. President was late but I was waiting for other items including the great pictures shown in this newsletter. Bro. Mark K.

The Mitzvah of Helping out at Funerals

Your HOD Galil brethren have been called on numerous occasions to help make a minyan at a funerals over the past few years.

This has truly met one of our pillars of Ahaha, Love of our fellow man.

To participate in helping to make a minyan at a funeral, is considered even more of a mitzvah  because the act of kindness can never be repaid.

We have also been asked to assist at shiva minyans and even making a minyan at a yorzheit shacharit, mincha or maariv.

Kol Hakavod to those brethren who have been willing to help our fellow Jews in these difficult occasions.

Gravestone Project - * UPDATE below:

The lodge is embarking on an impressive mitzvah project.

Bro Alan L. and Bro Ivor S. are heading up the start of a large project to get all Jewish Cemeteries to get stones on graves that do not have them. More details to follow soon. These are for burials that occurred many years ago and for one reason or another the deceased either did not have local family or the family themselves might be deceased now.

So far it looks like most of the Rabbis and Shuls are on board and we are now waiting to get an estimate of how many will be needed, which will enable us to firm up a price for markers.

Let all souls rest in peace with markers.

For anyone interested in helping on this project, please do not hesitate to call us.

Bro Alan and Bro Ivor

UPDATE  -  6-5-2019  :

Prices of markers and lists of names have been obtained from the 4 "main" cemeteries. The plan is to have an "unveiling" of ONE marker in conjunction with Rabbis from each community to launch the program and help get the word out.

Target date is  Sunday October 6, 2019 between Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur.

 ..............................................................................................................................

Bro Manny M. wants to remind us of this feature to our members.

Always looking to put people to work and places to offer them work.

  ..............................................................................................................................

Prison Chaplaincy

Bro. Manny M. & Bro. Dovid G. are looking for volunteers to assist with the Jewish programs at the Stringfellow Prison in Rosharon and the Jester 3 Prison in Richmond.

If you are interested in getting involved by visiting one of the prisons, please send a picture of your Drivers License to rabbi@rabbired.com ASAP.

They will then call a meeting and have a training session which will allow you to be a volunteer.  At least 6 people are needed to have an orientation class.
