Future Events

Target shooting practice: on a Sunday - (Postponed but will be SOON).

If interested please e-mail to express your interest, number of people joining you, day/date/time preferred.

Type Target shooting practice in the subject line - e-mail mark@kjis.com

Fishing, boating/sailing and/or socializing at a Marina: on a Sunday - SOON.

HOD Galil is wondering which of our members have boats, what kind of boats and where located.

The idea is to arrange some kind of social gathering near the Greater Houston area for our members one Sunday this year. Fishing, sailing and/or meeting for a social gathering on or near a boat or marina. Bay fishing is easier but offshore is also an option for the hardy fisherman (3am to 10 pm).  If you have a boat available please mention that with the Marina name when you reply.

Please reply directly to Bro. Mark K. via e-mail  (  mark@kjis.com  ) with the subject lineBOAT

If you already replied earlier this year then there is no need to reply again unless you have more to add.

President's Column:

Brethren - Welcome to my last column as your President.  I want to say that it’s been an honor to try and help move the work of this worthy assemblage forward, and though I won’t be President, I expect to continue to be as involved as the new board will let me!!

I also want to apologize for a lack of an August newsletter.  We had issues with the Brother of the Month column (which is also missing from this month’s) and I failed to produce a column, but I want to be clear it was through no fault of our faithful scribe, Bro Mark K.

My first bit of business is to announce a new effort that we are formally launching with the election of this board.  We are beginning the process of starting a new lodge in the Houston area, with a working title of HOD Southwest .  Though it will be 12 to 18 months before the new lodge is consecrated and it’s lodge meetings start, here is what we have determined so far:  We are targeting the southwest side of Houston with the new lodge, with the actual location to be somewhere between Fondren Southwest and Sugarland.  Bros Steven Meyer will be the first President, and Ivor Segall the VP.  Ray Sass will be the MC and Isaac Johary, the Inner Guard.  The process of forming a new lodge is both exciting and daunting.  We need to recruit many new members:  we don’t want the new lodge to gut the existing one.  For the first year or two, many of us will need to attend both lodge meetings while we build the new, and maintain the old.  I hope you all are as excited as I am to extend the reach of the Order!

I also want to remind everyone of our Houston Jewish Gravestone Project. Though you’ve seen announcements in our newsletter, you should be starting to see them in the wider Jewish press and shul bulletins.  Our hope is to make a big push for recognition and fundraising around the High Holidays.  We are asking each and everyone of you to talk up the project and become fundraisers.  This is not a cheap project - there are over 300 graves to be marked, and it will cost over $250 per grave to get it done.  If you need more details, you can go to www.hodgalil.org and read, or for others to donate.

I want to thank you all again for your confidence in me, and with Rosh Hashanah fast approaching, I wish you Anyada Buena, Tizku leshanim rabot (“A good New Year, and may you merit many more”, in Ladino and Hebrew).

Fraternally,

Bro Marc P

The Mitzvah of Helping out at Funerals

Your HOD Galil brethren have been called on numerous occasions to help make a minyan at a funerals over the past few years.

This has truly met one of our pillars of Ahava, Love of our fellow man.

To participate in helping to make a minyan at a funeral, is considered even more of a mitzvah because the act of kindness can never be repaid.

We have also been asked to assist at shiva minyans and even making a minyan at a yorzheit shacharit, mincha or maariv.

Kol Hakavod to those brethren who have been willing to help our fellow Jews in these difficult occasions.

HOD Galil - PRESS RELEASE

Houston,Texas

Monday 7/29/2019

Houston Gravestone Project

Lodge Galil of the Hebrew Order of David International (HOD) is coordinating a Community-Wide Mitzvah project to place a permanent marker on all Jewish graves that do not have them.   All congregations with cemeteries in Houston are involved.

We will have an unveiling of the first few markers in conjunction with Rabbis from each community with cemeteries, to launch the program and help get the word out. This is scheduled to take place Sunday October 6, 2019 between Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur. Exact times and locations to be advised closer to the date.

HOD Brothers Ivor Segall and Alan Lipman originated and are coordinating this project for Lodge Galil.  Gaitz Memorials is lending gracious assistance with purchasing, and engraving and Ramirez Cemetery Services is placing the markers. We are starting with burials that occurred many years ago, with those whom the cemetery has lost track of who is buried there, or who we know have no family.

Lodge Galil is looking for interested parties to help fund this project.  We do not have the funds to see this project to completion. If interested in helping with this project or discussing further, please do not hesitate to contact GravestoneProject@hodgalil.org, or donate directly at www.hodgalil.org/GravestoneProject .

The Hebrew Order of David is a Jewish fraternal organization supporting its members, and serving the community, applying Jewish ideals and values while providing its members the opportunity for personal development.  It is over 100 years old.

...............................................................................................................................

UPDATE :

The plan is to have an "unveiling" of ONE marker in conjunction with Rabbis from each community to launch the program and help get the word out.

Initial laying of first markers will take place on Sunday October 6, 2019 between Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur.
